General Infromation
Welcome to Troop 6!
We know you have a ton of questions. Check out the information below for details about the Troop.
Youth Protection
The safety of our scouts is the utmost concern for the Troop. We ask that all parents and adults take the BSA Youth Protection Training every 2 years. For more information check out https://www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection/
The Patrol Method
Troop 6 practices the patrol method. Boys are divided into patrols typically based on age. On the majority of campouts, they will camp and cook as a patrol. Every 6 months the patrol elects a new patrol leader. The patrol leader coordinates and organizes the patrol and attends the patrol leader council. A monthly meeting where the boys plan troop outings and meetings.
Boy Lead Troop
Troop 6 is a boy-led troop. As you may have already noticed this means things can look a little chaotic. This is to be expected! Every 6 months a new boy is elected to be a Senior Patrol Leader. The senior patrol leader runs the meetings.
Troop Meetings
We meet Tuesday night from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. August-May following the Knox County School schedule, if schools are out or canceled on Tuesday, we will NOT meet.
Membership Dues
Troop 6 membership dues are $175 a semester ($350 a year). This covers our charter dues for the national BSA, Boy’s Life, general expenses for the troop, and food and camping cost for the monthly scoutings. This enables the troop to not have to collect money for each outing. High adventures, summer camp special outings, and events are not covered under the annual dues. We use Venmo but will always take a check!
Summer Camp
Each summer Troop 6 attends summer camp. This is a week-long BSA-organized camp where the boys had the opportunity to earn rank advancements and merit badges. We highly recommend that all new scouts attend summer camp.
Calendar and Emails
The Troop’s primary means of communication is our Google calendar and emails. The Google Calendar is available on our website. Each event is updated with all the details about the event including who the adult lead is for the scouting.
BSA Uniforms
Troop 6 requires scouts to attend meetings in Class A scout shirts. At Eagle ceremonies, Courts of Honor, and scout Sunday, we require the scouts to wear the Troop 6 neckerchief, sash, and scout or khaki pants.
How can Parents Help?
There are many ways you can help the Troop and our Scouts! Become a Merit Badge counselor, Committee Member, Assistant Scoutmaster, help drive to scOUTings, etc. Please reach out to any of the adult leaders if you would like to help out! Please complete the Troop Resources survey.
Scout Handbook
We recommend that you purchase a handbook for your scout! There is a ton of great information in the handbook and it is a valuable resource for every scout. Troop 6 does not require scouts to bring their handbook to meetings!
scOUTings
We try to give all Scouts the opportunity to go on an outing a month. Sometimes we may plan two outings in a month, one outing for the older and more experienced scouts and one for the younger one too.
Merit Badges
The majority of merit badges will be earned at Summer Camp and in classes taught during troop meetings. We also encourage Scouts to attend local ‘Merit Badge Colleges” which are one day events and most of a badge can be completed in that one day. Scouts may also choose to work on badges on their own. Before beginning work on a merit badge, the scout should get approval from the Scoutmaster or one of the Assistant Scoutmasters and will be assigned a Merit Badge Councilor.
